Wildlife at Gulmarg
Gulmarg |One interesting place to visit would be the Gulmarg Biosphere Reserve. It is spread over an area of 180 square kilometers of land. The reserve is accredited for preserving several rare and endangered species like the Musk deer. It also has a wide choice of birds. The conifers prevail all over the forest. Some of the primary varieties are the Aesculus Indica, Pinus Griffithii, Cedrus Deodara and the Abies Pindrow. The foremost vegetation is of the Sorberia Tomentosa and Indigofera Heterantha. The land here is verdant with Dicotyledonous herbs such as the Rumex Patientia. Numerous species of the extraordinary, scarce and sheltered type are found at the Biosphere Reserve. The major species seen here are the Red Fox, Black Bear, Serow, the Leopard, Musk deer, Brown bear and the Hangul. One could spot several birds such as the Griffon Vulture, the Blue Rock Pigeon, the Kashmir Roller, the Jungle Crow, Koklas, the Show Cock, Monal and the European Hoopoe. Some of these birds are migratory while others are native to this reserve. The ideal time to visit the reserve to spot the animals would be from September to March. March to May would be the best time to visit if you wish to catch a glimpse of the birds.
You could visit the Alpather Lake which remains frozen until June. It is situated at the foot of the Apharwat Mountain. It is 13 kilometers away from Gulmarg. Tangmarg, which is an army camp 5 kilometers outside Gulmarg from where the road begins its climb up to Gulmarg. Gulmarg is a base for excursions to other places such as Lienmarg. A meandering path via the pine forests will lead you to Lienmarg. This place is ideal for camping. You could visit the Ningli Nallah. The Ningli Nallah is formed from the waters of the Alphater Lake and the snow that melts on the Apharwat Mountains. The brook then proceeds down to the valley to converge with the Jhelum River close to Sopur. People pay a visit to this extended blooming valley for picnics. Here one will spot the Gujars taking their herds up to the higher grazing lands during the summers.
Another popular place to go on a picnic is the Ferozepur Nallah. This place is particularly popular with anglers as it is a good spot for trout fishing. It is at a distance of approximately 5 kilometers from Gulmarg. The religious minded tourists could visit the Muslim shrine called the shrine of Baba Reshi on the slopes below Gulmarg. A Muslim saint died here in the year 1480 and his ziarat (tomb) is here. He is known to have been a courtier of a king called Zain-Ul-Aibidin before he decided to renounce with the worldly ways. Devotees of all religions visit this shrine.
