Pahalgam is a hill station in the Anantnag district of the state of Jammu and Kashmir. The word Pahalgam actually means the valley of shepherds. It is famous for its many shepherds. They are a common sight, driving their flocks of sheep along the paths all around town. Pahalgam is at a distance of approximately 95 kilometers from Srinagar. It is situated at a height of 2130 meters and the night time temperatures here are warmer than in Gulmarg (another hill station in Kashmir), which is situated much higher up. This place is ideal for those who like the mountains but not too much cold. The Pahalgam valley is situated at the convergence of the Sheshnag Lake and the Lidder River. The beautiful Lidder River which flows through the town is bounded by elevated fir covered mountains with snow capped peaks growing behind them. Pahalgam is in fact an assembly of eight villages.

Part of the fun is in the journey up to Pahalgam. You can approach it by road. It takes about two and a half to four hours to cover the distance. If you take a bus or a taxi from Srinagar to Pahalgam, you will come across a number of Mughal gardens en route. You could stop over at Pampore. This is the center of Kashmir’s saffron Industry. You can see the saffron plants growing here. Saffron is highly cherished for its essence, aroma and coloring properties. Consequently it is rather expensive.

Further up you will come across the ruins of two Hindu temples which were constructed in Avantipur between 855 and 883 AD. The first temple is the smaller of the two and it is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The larger temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and one still finds some excellent sculptures and columns of Grecian appearance, called the Avantiswami temple. Going along the road you will come to Achabal, a Mughal garden. Shahjahan’s daughter Jahanara had commissioned the garden in the year 1620. Noor Jahan loved this well crafted and designed garden. Another garden up the road is at Kokarnag. This garden is a Paradise for rose lovers. Its enchanting beauty will captivate you to no end!
